...shake off the ripple addiction, and focus on other projects.
my nephew's birthday blanket is finished. two ripple blankets in just over a month... i think my ripple itch is sated for the time being.
i've made a somewhat binding pact with myself not to buy any yarn this year (i said somewhat binding - we'll see how it goes) and running out of the purple yarn half-way through the blanket was my first test.
i resisted the urge to run out and just purchase more purple yarn so i could continue my color scheme and decided to go with what i had on hand.
it's a little more mish-mashy than i would normally do... but i don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. it's good for me to push myself out of my comfort zone every now and again (and good for me to stick to my non-yarn buying pledge).

It's beautiful! And I'm sure the recipient will love it, purple or no.

I love it, I though you planned that phase into more blue. It looks like a genious color design to me and I for one don't think it is fair that you can do that on accident.
Horray for happy accidnets and horray for sticking to your pledge.

You're right, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones is a good thing! And the blanket colours are wonderful and vibrant.

Can't believe I stumbled on your ripple blanket! I think I HAVE that very same purple yarn! Here's the background. Many years ago my mother crocheted ripple throw blankets using background solid colours mixed with very bright multicoloured yarns (yellow, red, green, purple). I'm a knitter who doesn't crochet. Never could figure out the crochet ripple stitch. HOWEVER! - I have her leftover batches of untouched purple and the multi-coloured yarn. There might even be a pack of four skeins of the purple still sealed. I do know I've seen a pack of the multi-coloured yarn still sealed as a pack of four (somewhere).
For sheer fun I've just posted a silliness under the cat hair book giveaway blog. Not really expecting (or wanting) to 'win' since the book I have to 'Knit with Dog Hair' has gone unused for umpteen years despite my having had two American Eskimos with perfect fur for such a project. I had planned to give away as much of the acrylic yarn as I could since I have far too much yarn in my stash. I'd be more than happy to give you the purple if you still want it for your blanket. That would do my heart good (and it's 'paying it forward').
PS: I love knitting blogs such as yours and am having fun reading them.

oooooh it's so gorgeous! love it! well i am both totally impressed at your no-yarn-buying pact AND happy it turned out that way because actually it's so much more fun and creative and original all mixed up like that. LOVE it!

Hmmm...I know you said 'somewhat binding' but it's out in the universe now! ;)
I've been trying to slowly push my color boundaries (it started when someone casually remarked that my Ravelry projects page was blue and green)...I find it fun...just like I find this blanket.
I'm not convinced your ripple itch has been scratched...I'm just going to wait and see for a few weeks! ;)

I made a ripple afghan for my sister. When I crocheted, I didn't know how to read patterns and someone just taught me the stich. I crocheted a chain "until it looked long enough" and started in with great gusto. Several years later, when I finally decided to finish it, red heart had stopped carrying the peach color and my mom found it in an obscure yarn shop where they were living.
The reason I needed more yarn is that I found out about the weight of yarn and stretch with that project - I was trying for an afghan that would cover their queen bed. When I was done, it covered the king they had upgraded to and hung over the edges. It weighed 13 pounds (because it cost me $33 dollars to mail it for Christmas!)
I have not made a ripple blanket since. Yours is awesome.

Lovely blankie! Hopefully you've got that ripple out of your system, but maybe it's not such a bad addiction!

i like the switch from purple to blue. anytime i make a mistake in my knitting (or change from the pattern in my head) i'm reminded of my friend, Beth, and how she calls them "design elements."
