the completely amazing kathy over at work in progress is going to have a baby very very soon! lily and i joined crafty forces to make a "welcome to the world" gift:
i knit up a seamless baby shrug (rav link). i wasn't sure what a baby in hawaii would need as far as handknits go... so i settled on cotton shrug, figuring there would be cool ocean/mountain breezes or overly enthusiastic air conditioning to contend with at some point this summer.
and miss lillian decorated the onesie. kathy calls baby "wiggle," so a wiggle worm seemed the obvious choice.
sending so much love and best wishes to kathy, partner, and sweet baby wiggle!!
the day of which i have been waiting for has arrived! lily is officially obsessed with knitting! it started last fall, when she wanted to knit a bib for her baby doll.
she then decided she needed to make a regular sized version for her baby cousin hattie. she started last fall and then stalled out until earlier this month when she got her knitting mojo back and finished it up.
i showed her how to purl and from then on there was no stopping her... she decided all her cousins needed lily-knit gifts, and got to work. in the past two weeks she has made, a bookmark for kaia:
a washcloth for henners:
and a mini basket for isaac (which was also her first foray into using dpn's):
it really is a knitting mama's dream come true! i'm so proud of my little knitter!
and last but definitely not least is a little laura ingalls doll that i crocheted for sabrina:
i used the garden friend gnome pattern (rav link) for the basic shape and then just fiddled around until i got the little laura details right.
i hope the books and doll work their magic and sabrina falls in love with little laura, because i live just two hours east of walnut grove, mn and then i can lure them up for a little house on the prairie themed visit!
her class is studying ancient china in school and she came home last week all excited about yin-yang. when brian asked her what she was going to do with her embroidery she looked at him like it was the silliest question in the world and answered, "hang it in my room because i'm turning it into a hobbit hole."
i love that girl (how she managed to include taoism, tolkien, and snowflake bling into one 4" embroidery hoop is beyond me).
this year for lily's teachers' gifts we did a joint crafty project - personalized tote bags.
lily did a drawing for each person, i embroidered part of it and then she finished the rest with fabric markers.
lily really got into the fabric markers and wanted to make a shirt for one of her special friends.
i love getting lily involved in the making of holiday gifts, luckily my christmas sweatshop doesn't seem to adhere to child labor laws. although don't worry, her hours are no where near as long as mine!
lily is currently in the throws of a sewing rampage.
she's constantly wearing her crafting apron (which she made during a previous sewing rampage) and dreaming up new projects to make. her current obsession: making clothes for her doll becky.
this is becky's new pippi longstocking dress. the design is a lily original.
she also made becky this new skirt, following a pattern from her book sewing school.
a new american girl catalog arrived in the mail yesterday, and instead of going through it asking for dolls and clothes she went through it looking for inspiration for what to make becky next!
(i could write a whole post about how proud of her i am for the fact that she is content not with an american girl doll like most of her friends have, but with her my friend becky doll, which used to me my doll when i was little. it warms a mama's heart.)
it also warms this mama's heart to see what an amazingly creative and talented person my daughter has become! i love you lily!!
