i am often surprised how cold my hands can get while i'm knitting. i mean wouldn't you think the movement and the proximity of all that yarn would keep my fingers warm?
finally deciding to do something other than marvel at how cold my fingers were, i set out to make a pair of fetchings (pattern or rav link). and you know what? they really do make a difference. as soon as i was done with the first one i put it on while knitting the second and my encased hand was noticeably less frigid.
as i mentioned in my last post, the yarn is handspun from springtree road maya's etsy shop and i love it. i could stare at it all day long the colors are so beautiful, and it's softer than you could even imagine. love it.
and here they both are in all their stripy, squishy glory:
(this is me doing my von trapp family singers pose.)
(and here i am enjoying my coffee whilst smirking at my husband. see - fingerless gloves are perfect for any occasion!)
and this one last random picture i took this morning for louise (who keeps using words like, "humid" and phrases like, "eating popsicles" and "making jam" in her blog posts) here is a minnesota fruit tree in january (and i had to wade through snow up to my knees to get to the tree!):
hope you all are keeping warm! (or cool depending on your hemisphere.)
-melissa
That yarn is just delicious! I'm not surprised you keep admiring your Fetchings. I wore my wrist warmers today, and am amazed at just how warm they kept me. Your tree photo is stunning too. Makes me glad I'm indoors in the warm!

that yarn is amazing! You're not helping me curb my handspun addiction!
love the von Trapp hand motion you threw in there :)

Oh those Fetchings are fabulous. Such gorgeeous yarn! I agree, they make a surprising difference to the warmth of your hands. Surprising, when you consider there are no fingers!!!! Love the snowy twigs too. Thanks so much for your lovely comments on my blog. It's always good to hear from you. Kepp warm! Ros

fetchings are a great idea. when my hands get cold while knitting i usually think that means i'm supposed to get up and move around. whenever i see fingerless gloves or wrist warmers i think about how useless they'd be outside. silly knitter.
i love your outdoor photo. it is so funny to read the australian blogs and have people complaining about the heat and see pictures of their yards and gardens this time of year. this is the first time that the idea of hemispheres is really sinking in for me :)

that is too funny-- i KNEW it was a sound of music pose!
the yarn is absolutely wonderful (as is all of maya's yarn), the fetchings are just adorable and YOU are very very clever because my hands are always cold too! (hatching plans as i type...)
and that apple picture is so cool (literally and figuratively)-- you have knee deep snow? it was 50 degrees here today! craziness!

oh thank you! i love the photo and am going to make it my wallpaper! : - )
love the fetchings - will have to have some of those once we swap seasons!

Great mitts! And the von trapp family pose made me laugh!

i think fingerless mitts are terribly useful outside!
for extra warmth over gloves...
if you're taking photos...
if you must text...
yeah! i stand in support of fingerless mitts!
:)

You are just darling! I love your snuggly coffee drinking picture. Those gloves look so squishy and beautiful.
Up to your knees? Really? Wow!

First, that last picture is a gorgeous image! Second, I have to admit that Sound of Music came to mind with that second picture...continuing to show my age. And finally...so many folks are down on fingerless gloves and say if you experience real winter, they are ridiculous. But I say they have a purpose just as you've shown. It's actually surprising how much heat they provide sitting at a computer or such activities. And yours? Lovely.
