moving days

Hi all!

Sorry I haven't posted in ages, I'm crazy busy over here!  I had to clone myself and enlist the help of my incredible mother

To get everything packed and ready to go (3 weeks earlier than I had expected!)

None of this is easy in the July heat when you live on the 4th floor!

Thankfully it is all gone now, on a boat bound for Munich.

Lama has said his Brooklyn goodbyes to his best friend Peter

 (who this year often brought along a friend to visit too)

After driving lama cross country to his happy Wisconsin retreat, I am back in NYC for my final days (sniff!) and am trying to take as many pictures and hit as many of my favorite spots as humanly possible...

but the problem is, the city is SWELTERINGly hot with triple digit temps. 

 and heat fog is trying to swallow us all up!

At least heat fog can be pretty.  It lends a certain kind of nostalgic feel to the city.

I know much of the country is boiling hot right now so I hope that wherever you are, you're staying cool and finding ways to enjoy the summer!

old snow, new snow- a tale of two cities

A miracle happened on Friday here in NYC-- another snow day! The snow had already started lightly Thursday night as I walked home from work,

but we could have never expected the mayor to actually cancel school twice in one year!  Of course this meant that I'd be out all day with the camera to catch the newly falling snow.  And it just so happened that Melissa also had plans to go out with her camera to capture the piles of already fallen snow! 

So we decided to go out on matching snow walks and then put up a post together to show our old snow/new snow!

Melissa went to the gorgeous park near her house, covered in piles of snow

that has an incredible waterfall.

And I hit the streets in my neighborhood

before heading to the marvelous park near my house.

Melissa's views might be more elegantly serene,

whereas in the big city you can't avoid lots of color.

And while Melissa's snow might show evidence of lovely woodland creatures,

the tracks around here are mostly from much larger urban creatures.

In the end, we were both thrilled to be walking amidst our own versions of the beautiful winter white!

for the love of brooklyn

for the LOVE of Brooklyn  is a really wonderful photoblog run by the very talented Jill and Peter.  They do such a fantastic job of capturing the beauty and charm of this glorious borough we live in and I have been happily following the blog and their flickr group for some time now. 

So you can imagine how ridiculously humbled and honored I was when they asked to interview me as a local photographer for their "Feature Fridays."

winter wonderland

the incredible thing about snow in nyc

is that despite the fact that it is one of the most magical things imaginable,

hardly anyone is out enjoying it!

to find yourself alone in the middle of the brooklyn bridge- with life and snow swirling all around you...

it simply does not get any more incredible than that!

it has arrived!

finally!  the snow has come to nyc!!!

sadly we didn't get much while we still had the light-- but it's coming down harder now and i'm headed back out!  hip hip hooray!

warmth for the brooklyn boy

remember henry ?

he was born new year's eve last year.  ten months later he is beyond adorable- crawling around everywhere and going on endless adventures around brooklyn.  now that the weather is getting colder, i thought he'd need some help staying warm,

so i made him some mittens

and then this seed stitch jacket

thankfully the buttons passed his thorough inspection

both mittens and jacket were done in berroco comfort (which i LOVE- especially for kids' garments).

let's hope they're warm enough to keep little henry nice and warm as he continues on his adventures with his number one mom.

Mapping Main Street

When I heard about the Mapping Main Street project on NPR I knew the sandwich had to hop on board. 

"Mapping Main Street is a collaborative documentary media project that creates a new map of the country through stories, photos and videos recorded on actual Main Streets."

We are all about collaboration here at the sandwich. - And lucky to live near such lovely main streets.

art under the bridge

this past weekend was dumbo's art under the bridge festival.  what a lovely excuse to go back to dumbo with my camera (as if i needed one).

that pile of garbage is actually a human sculpture.  the artist, chin chin yang, is actually standing inside- with a sign encouraging people to decorate him, turing pollution into art. 

one of the best things about this festival is that it is so interactive, there are all sorts of ways that people can jump in and create their own art.

and there were even some representatives of the fiber arts.  there were quite a few of these crocheted people throughout. 

i couldn't help but be reminded of lindsey when i saw this one (there's an infamous picture from college of lindsey pretending to be run over by a car (of course hers had much more dramatic flair)).

and this piece, river's edge by john monteith- created a sea of oyster shells in the midst of the cobblestone. it certainly smelled like the seaside.

it was a wonderful afternoon.  can't wait to see what they come up with next year.

what can be better after a very very long week than to get some fresh air,

put your feet in the sand,

relish in a breezy walk,

and soak in the sights of coney island.
